Virginia Beach Winter Swell?

A bunch of the gang were going out surfing and I was giving every excuse possible not to go.   I said it was too cold.  I was too busy.  The waves weren’t good enough.  The truth was that there was no real reason not to go.  I just didn’t feel like going but as I sat around I starting thinking about this summer when we went on vacation to the Outer Banks.  Our friend Jett Colonna came down and spent a few days with us.  If you have ever met Jett you would know the man is a machine.  He would always come by first thing in the morning and see if we were going out.  Even though the break was only a few blocks away we would always pack the car with all the boards so we wouldn’t have to carry them.  We would ask Jett if he wanted a ride and he would politely decline.  He would proceed to carry his 10′6 Austin, that he named “Big Girl”, the 2 or 3 blocks to the beach, surf all day, and carry Big Girl back to his cottage.  We on the other hand would drive to the beach, take a break during the mid day heat, and drive back home when we were finished surfing.  This was everyday.  Jett would never come out of the water until the sun was setting.  Did I also say that Jett turned 66 this year?  What can I say the man is a machine and I have no excuse.

Our Buddy Jett

If you know anything about surf history you have heard the name Buzzy Trent.  Buzzy was one of the original big wave surfers.  Buzzy passed his surfing love and skill to his son Ivan.  Ivan was also an accomplished big wave surfer.  Ivan became a navy seal and retired in Virginia Beach.  The Trent legend continues in Virginia Beach with Ivan’s son Bud.  Bud Trent has surfed on the Austin Team for 2 years now.  Bud’s skills and talents are starting to be noticed by more and more people in the Industry.  We expect to see great things from Bud in the 2009 season.

The Legend Continues

In this business you come across many talented people.  We have been lucky to surround ourselves with a lot of creative artistically inclined people.  One such person is David Morris.  He also known as Davmo to his friends.  Davmo is an artist in Virginia Beach.  He is also a very talented kneeboarder (see photo by Matt Haddaway also a very talented artist friend).  If you get a chance check out his work at http://www.myspace.com/davmo_contemporary_artist .  Get him to tell you the story of his “Alabama Black Snake” that he sold on Ebay.
