After the pigment was laid down it was up to Uncle Joe to sand all the edges and make the lines crisp. Joe has the patience of Jobe or maybe that should be the patience of “Joe”. This was the original 60′s color and pattern. Austin will come back with a soft power pad with 150 [...]
We finished wrapping her with 4 oz and had to place the NOS logo. During the original restoration the old logo was placed back into the wrong position. It also was placed too deep into the board. The final crazy thing was that they used a reproduction and it was the wrong logo for this [...]
The gun had too many little areas that we needed to fix so we decided to cap it with a layer of 4 oz just for good protection. Since we sanded away a TON of extra resin we would actually end up with a board that was just as light as when we got her. [...]
First step was to sand her down to weave. This is where you really see what you have to work with. Actually it wasn’t too bad. She had a TON of resin built up on her. It almost had a 1/4 inch of pure resin on the top to make her smooth. It looked like [...]
One of our good friends and customers asked us if we could restore one of his favorite boards. It was a big Greg Noll gun that they think was once Miki Dora’s personal board. We jumped at the chance. Upon first inspection we thought the board would be an easy restoration because it looked pretty [...]
When we put the panels on the old Hobie we thought she looked a little plain so we went back and outlined the panel with another color. We final sanded her with 100 grit and shot her with gloss. Sanded the gloss with 400 grit and then 600 grit. Followed that with rubbing compound and [...]
Getting close to the finish. After we sanded her down with 100 grit we taped her off to lay down the color the customer requested. Panels were the style in the 60′s so that is just what we laid down. Each color had to be taped off and shot seperately. When you do pigmented panels [...]
After the center section was built up the board was completely sanded down to the weave. We then added a 4 oz cap layer top and bottom. This would add to the structural integrity and seal up any little cracks. The board was then hotcoated top and bottom. Finally the board was sanded with 100 [...]
After the the board was reassembled the new stringers had to be shaped. A quick few passes from a planer and the new stringer was down to size. We had to use a few strips of 10 oz to fill in the glass between the old glass layers and the new stringer. At this same [...]
We then glued the other 1/4 stringer on top and followed that by the 2nd half of the board. Using many straps we cinched the whole thing together and left it to dry for a couple of days.
