Here the tail block is being test fit. Notice that it is oversized to allow for the skins/rails to be added and then it can be shaped to match.
Here is a shot of the begining stages of the nose buck. This will have to be shaped to match after the skins installed.
Putting on the first rail strips I learned a few lessons. First that you have to screw on both sides for the rails at the same time so you don’t warp your spine! Second that Thomas Blakes original measurements do not make for a flowing outline. I had to take the rail boards off and refit quite a few ribs to get a nice outline. So moral of the story was don’t put glue on until you have test fit it once!
Here is the shot of us putting the spine into the board. Each Rib is screwed to the spine in the center with an 1.25″ screw.
I figured I would do two posts today to show a bit more. This is the ribs after all of the weight removal. Next step is putting the inner rail strips on!
Drilling holes in the ribs to use the jigsaw for excess weight removal.
Here we are laying out our templates for the rib sections of the kookbox. Next step to follow later….
Here is a sneak peek of a few boards I took to the surf shop yesterday. Swing in this weekend and check them out.
This is the start of making templates for the ribs for a hollow wooden surfboard similar to boards that were used ca. 1937 by Thomas Blake. We are hoping to keep this as a photo blog build so look for updates frequently.
I just wanted to post this as a reminder that cut off for Christmas custom orders is Thanksgiving weekend! This will give us enough time to make a perfect hand crafted board. We are currently building 20 or so new in stock boards that will be in the shop racks around December 1st. Happy Hollowdays!
